Employee Owned Aqua Engineers buys sewage treatment plant from Grove Farm

Kauai-Hawaii - Aqua Engineers, Inc. (“Aqua”) is announcing the purchase of Puhi Sewer & Water Company (PSWC) from Grove Farm Company, Inc.   The purchase was approved by the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission in December 2014 and closed in July 2015.  The PUC regulates all franchised or certificated public service companies operating in the State and needs to approve all requests for the acquisition, sale, disposition or other exchange of utility properties.

PSWC - PSWC currently provides wastewater collection, treatment and water reuse services to over 1,300 residential, commercial and industrial customers.  Aqua has been the operator of PSWC for nearly 20 years and has been responsible for maintaining reliable services to the Lihue-Puhi community on a daily basis.

Aqua - Aqua has been 100% owned by its 95 Hawaii based employee-owners since its 2006 acquisition by the Aqua Engineers Employee Stock Ownership Trust.   While Aqua currently operates and maintains more than 30 wastewater and 15 water treatment facilities on the islands of Kauai, Oahu, Lanai, Maui and Hawaii, the Puhi Sewer facility becomes the first and only treatment facility owned outright by Aqua.

Aqua is the largest firm in the State that owns and operates R-1 reclamation facilities, the highest quality effluent recognized in Hawai'i.  Aqua also has several very long term utility privatization contracts to operate and maintain the wastewater collection and treatment facilities for the US Army on Oahu.

Since becoming employee owned Aqua (www.aquaengineers.com) has been recognized for a number of honors and awards including, a GE Ecomagination Award for its partnership with the U.S. military and the Grove Farm Waiahi facility, an APEC USA County of Kauai finalist for the Hawaii Business Innovation Showcase, the Picses (Performance and Innovation in SRFs Creating Environmental Success) for the Waimea, Kauai, Wastewater Treatment facility design and an honor for sustainable solutions by the U.S. Army.

Ken Davis, President and COO:

“Our 95 employee-owners are looking forward to taking this next step in the future growth of Aqua Engineers - our first acquisition of a regulated public utility. We have the expertise in utility services from operations to accounting so it makes sense to move into ownership. For more than 10 years we have successfully owned and operated the Army wastewater utility at Schofield Barracks on Oahu through one of the nation’s first utility privatization contracts. Acquiring Puhi Sewer and Water will further our investment in Hawaii and Kauai as a locally-based, employee-owned company.”
